It is a sign of a quiet revolution in an industry where image is everything: for the past three months the fashion bible Vogue has put a black woman on its cover in America.

The move has sent ripples though the fashion industry, which many have long regarded as discriminating against black models in favour of an aesthetic idealising a very Caucasian image of beauty. But no longer. The great moment came in March when America’s first black first lady, Michelle Obama , stared from the cover of Vogue. She was followed in April by the singer Beyoncé. Now, in May, it’s the turn of black model Liya Kebede.
